Trini Treats was created, not just to satisfy my own craving for sweets from my home country, but to satisfy the craving of the large "Trini" population and to share a taste of our rich and diverse culture to our friends and relatives here in US.
Trinidad and Tobago are the two southernmost twin-islands of the chain of islands in the Caribbean. Our population is a combination of so many races, religions and cultures that visitors are often surprised at first glance. Chinese cuisine in Trinidad is unlike what you will be served in China, the same goes for African, Indian, Syrian or any other of our cultures. Food has evolved to become distinctively Trini. For example, gulab jamon at an Indian restaurant is a spongy milky ball soaked in syrup; however, a gulub jamon in Trinidad and Tobago is a sweet glazed dough. The British plum pudding has evolved to become our own very rich black rum cake. Heaven! No similarity to an American fruitcake. In addition to the variety of food, we are also well known for steelpan, calypso, soca music and our vibrant, pulsating carnival. Some of our internationally famous Trinbagonians include Pulitzer Prize recipient Vidya Naipaul, the first Miss Universe of African ethnicity, Janelle Commissiong and 1998 Ms. Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam. Other well-known mainstream icons are Peter Minshall, designer for the 1992, 1996 & 2002 Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, Cricketer Brian Lara and more recently, 2011 Project Runway winner, Anya Ayoung-Chee and world renowned Rap/Hip Hop singer, Nicki Minaj. Trini Treats will be adding more sweet confections as we grow. In the meantime we hope you enjoy what we currently have to offer. |
