My Story:
I dreamed of being a bridal shop owner or a restaurateur since I was a young girl in Trinidad. I reconciled with myself however, that until such time that I can accomplish any of these, I will hang on to my job as a legal secretary. I "hung on" for over 25 years.
It's not that I gave up living any of these dreams; in 1990 I moved to New York and enrolled in the world renowned Fashion Institute of Technology to start my bridal shop dream. My intention was to study Fashion Design for two years while I experienced a different culture and the changing seasons then return to T&T. Along the way, I got married, had two kids, then got divorced and when I came to the realization, I found myself at a desk as a legal secretary again. I asked myself “What happened to my dreams?”
On many occasions I wanted to give that special gift that represented my country but there was no place to find it. Cookies, brownies, truffles, cupcakes were readily available but there was no Trinbagonian coconut fudge, tambran ball or toolum. I had no choice but to make my favorite desserts. Every person who received my gifts came back to me with raving compliments and wanted to know where they can purchase these exotic sweets. My rum fruit cake and coconut fudge were the most popular among my friends, so I decided to create a place where others could find their new indulgence.
I know that this is the right time to merge all the activities I feel passionate about. By combining the creativity that I intended to use for my bridal shop and my love for quality food, I created Trini Treats. My hope is that it would introduce our rich culinary crossover culture to a worldly audience through food, fill the need for a Trini’s sweet tooth and hopefully make everyone feel that they are in the Caribbean when they take a bite into one of our delectable sweets.
I sincerely hope you will enjoy the sweets of Trini Treats as much I enjoy creating it for you.
With gratitude,
Farida
